Purpose:

The “Healing Together” support group is designed to provide a safe and nurturing space for parents and their children to process emotions and navigate the challenges faced after experiencing the impact of a hurricane. Through engaging read-alouds, creative art activities, and experiential learning, families will work together to build resilience, enhance emotional understanding, and decrease anxiety.

Target Audience:

Parents and children (ages 3-10) who have experienced the emotional and psychological impacts of a hurricane. Parents are encouraged to use their judgment regarding their child’s age and need to determine if this group is a suitable fit, even if they are outside of the suggested age range.

Welcome and Check-In (15 minutes)

Begin each session with a warm welcome.

Facilitate a brief check-in where participants can share their feelings or experiences related to the week’s theme.

Read-Aloud (20 minutes)

Select age-appropriate books that focus on themes of resilience, emotions, and coping with change (e.g., “The Invisible String” by Patrice Karst or “A Stormy Day” by Keri Smith).

Art Activity (30 minutes)

Engage families in a guided art project that allows them to express their feelings creatively. Examples include:
Emotion Mandalas: Creating mandalas that represent different emotions felt during and after the hurricane.
Resilience Collage: Using magazine cutouts and art supplies to create a collage that symbolizes strength and hope.
